Rapinoe played soccer with Rapinoe in order to escape the drug addiction that plagued the area. She played soccer with her dad as her coach throughout her teens. When she was a teenager, Rapinoe was a student at Foothill High School and played soccer with Elk Grove Pride, the town's Elk Grove Pride team of the Women's Premier Soccer League. Her sister Rachael Rapinoe is also part of the Northern California Olympic Development Program for children under 14. Along with Rachael her, she was accepted into the University of Portland Oregon. As a freshman in 2005, the young woman was a leader in her Portland Pilots squad to an unbeaten season that culminated with an NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. Rapinoe's success continued as an athlete in her second year, and she became the leading scorer nationally with ten goals. However, her season ended prematurely due to an injury in her ACL. In 2007, she suffered exactly the same injury ending her season in just two matches. After recovering Rapinoe bounced back in 2008, helping the Pilots to record a winning 20-2.

Though she was originally born in Portland but her family lived during the early years of her childhood in Boring. In Boring, they had a honey farm despite her aversion to bees. After her parents split in the early 1990s, her family spent a brief time in Montana prior to moving to Seattle. Because her mom's work was constantly changing and her business was a bee-farming venture didn't last very long. Maria along with her entire family moved to Minnesota. In Minnesota she worked as a member of Apple Valley High School's award-winning Forensics Program as well as the National Forensic League. She was quite popular at school, and she was even named the Homecoming Queen. Early years and career She studied at The Juilliard School and realized her long-term dream of being in a Broadway production. Amy Sedaris, a well-known actress, who was also able to see her on stage in a show said she'd create a character for her in Strangers with Candy. Maria got her big break in this role that was performed by an innocent teenager, who later became intimate with an ex-convict former prostitute/junkie. Then she had small roles in a variety of comedy movies such as Forgetting and Accepted Sarah Marshall before in 2005 being in the film Hitch along with Will Smith and Eva Mendes. In addition, she appeared in two music videos, but they aren't so well-known as Sensitive Man of Nick Lowe and Friends of Friends from Hospitality. She appeared in numerous TV series too such as Big Apple: The Education of Max Bickford as well as Cougar Town. Portlandia where she had only one appearance was one of her favorites due to its entertaining, imaginative and hilarious nature.
